Chapter Eighteen

‘S

o, Nate, buddy, who wants Muriel dead?” Harry Harrington asked, sipping the previous day’s reheated coffee as they sat at their adjoining cubicles in the Central Precinct detective’s office that Saturday afternoon.

Hands pointed to “12:31” on the big wall clock that reminded Nate of those on which he counted down the minutes until the end-of-school bell when he was a teen at Corvallis High.

“Harry, that’s the $64 million question, and, yes, I realize I’m hyperbolizing,” Nate grumbled. “But $64,000 doesn’t buy what it used to.”

He twirled a plastic stirring stick in his foam cup, sipped, made a face and then set the coffee aside as a lost cause.

“She said she runs that trail every day, and rarely does anybody else use it,” Nate told Harry. “So it would seem the trip wire was likely meant for her. So that raises two questions: Who would know she used that trail? And how would they stand to benefit with Muriel dead?”

Harrington nodded absently.

“I need to think on that for a while,” Darrow announced. “Meanwhile, let’s drop over to Stag’s Leap Marina and follow up with those other folks I mentioned – the receptionist and the baker.”

Harrington screwed up his lips. “I’m still a little fuzzy on how these two personalities came to be part of our investigation,” he said, with a look of smug humor.

“You know it was the Miss Marple librarian and her new Dr. Watson in his cricket whites,” Darrow replied, tight-lipped, as he pulled on his jacket and rose to head for the garage.
